Usworth College   Excellence is there for the people

Judges for the journals fourth landmark awards are searching the entries for the public sector category.

The awards, which are organised in partnership with Newcastle law firm Watson Burton LLP, will single out the cream of the region’s building industry.

The building excellence awards, also supported by surveyor GVA Lamb & Edge and Allied Irish Bank (GB), were introduced to highlight the best concept, design and construction.

This week the judging panel is urging developers of public sector buildings which demonstrate ways they have added value to their local communities to step forward and join last year’s winners, the Usworth Sixth Form College in Washington.

Judges praised the £10m international music centre for its glass atrium, which runs the length and height of the whole building.

In each category, the judges panel, which includes some of the region’s most experienced property professionals, will select one winner, with awards for the architect, developer and contractor.

And there will be an overall North East Landmark of the year award, which the panel will select from one of the six winners.

Entry is open to developments in the journal and evening gazette circulation areas, which will have been completed between August 16 2006, and August 16 2007.
